Have Heroic Times Passed Away

For my final blog of the website, I will be posting one of the first things I wrote in this course, a heroic times reflection. It was amazing to see how much I have learned on this topic and how my opinion has changed. Hope you Enjoy!

When I think about the heroes in our world today, I often draw blanks. Of course, I have many people in my life that I look up to, but those people wouldn’t be considered heroes to most others. I believe heroism can be defined as an act of selflessness that benefits the greater good and positively impacts the lives of many. Most of the heroes in our world today are figments of the human imagination. Superman, Batman, Thor and many others were created in the image of the ideal hero, but all this has done is mark the end of heroic times for humanity. How can a child growing up in today’s world expect to live up to the expectations humanity has set for heroism. Things like super-speed and the ability to fly around fighting crime aren’t things humans can ever live up to, thus making modern heroism impossible to achieve. In the past, the word hero may have been associated with first responders, members of the military, and other prolific humans in history. However, today, the word hero is scarcely used to describe any human. It is not the people that have changed, but instead our very definition of what makes a hero. Modern age heroism is no longer recognized as such and I find that to be very saddening. The shift away from heroic times in humanity takes away a tangible goal for humans and promotes a lack of internal responsibility to be good. Worst of all, the true heroes we walk past every day aren’t being recognized and appreciated for what they do.
