A Story of War and Change offers an eye-opening perspective into the way war can impact a person and change them forever. War has different impacts on all three major characters in this story. In regards to the soldiers, they seem scared of death. The attacks have put them in the face of death so many times before, they refuse to put themselves there again, even to help a fellow soldier. The sergeant on the other hand, becomes cowardly in Kirash’s point of view, after telling him that the burning soldier is not his problem. In regards to Kirash, war has made him brave and fearless. Although he had only just graduated high school, his youth did not dictate his maturity. He managed to bring the soldier into an ambulance and do everything he could to save him, even though he knew the man wouldn’t survive. The soldiers, sergeant, and Kirash are all changed by the war, but not in the same way. Kirash made the difficult decision to take action in the face of danger and adversity. This decision is what made Kirash the hero. While other people decided to avoid action, Kirash risked his life to take action. This decision is what makes heroes in the real world in addition to literature. So many heroes like soldiers, policemen, and firefighters make decisions every day to take action in their lives to help others. A Story of War and Change highlights the way our action in life defines who we are and how we are viewed by others.
